We are a climate analytics not-for-profit established in 2021. We provide energy system modelling software and analysis to support efficient and effective energy transition planning decision-making. We are entirely grant-funded by the Quadrature Climate Foundation, Google.org, Sequoia Climate Foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies. Our data, software and analysis is used by developers, financiers, planners and think tanks internationally

We are looking for an experienced Power Systems Analyst, familiar with financing and modelling software with a strong understanding of the Philippine market. Proven fluency in English and Filipino is mandatory. About the role

The Philippines Analyst will continue our work with partners in the Philippines, using energy systems models to produce education, training and analysis that supports energy transition decisions. The successful candidate will be an in-country Philippine analyst with a strong understanding of the power market and the mechanisms underpinning their operations and financing. They will be responsible for maintaining partnerships, collecting data from primary sources, analysing market developments, using capacity expansion and unit dispatch models, and producing policy-grade deliverables.

In addition, they will develop regular ‘Explainers’ and ‘Updates’. The former are informative and educational, demystifying aspects of the energy system, either in a specific country or more broadly. The latter are short analyses that provide insights for a focus country/region using TransitionZero’s in-house data and tools.

Short-Term Goals (6 months after joining)

  • Consolidate historical and contemporary information about power plants, generation patterns, interconnector activity, and wholesale market prices and power sector emissions in the Philippines into our Data Warehouse
  • Support, and where appropriate, lead the development of data validation and model calibration standards and processes for capacity expansion and unit dispatch models in the Philippines
  • Support the finalisation of a bundle of models and scenarios exploring capacity expansion and grid dispatch in the Philippines
  • Assist the Southeast Asia Lead in identifying and recruiting external validators for models, and organising a Roadshow to the region to present in-person initial findings to external validators in closed-door meetings
  • Produce ‘Explainers’ and ‘Updates’ for the Philippines using TransitionZero’s data and modelling software

Long-Term Goals (12 months after joining)

  • Incorporate feedback gathered from the roadshow to develop and refine model scenarios to support policy analysis for energy transition planning decision-making in the Philippines
  • Assist the Southeast Asia Lead in organising further roadshows with an emphasis on policy practitioners and market participants, including organising meetings and developing presentation decks
  • Support, and where appropriate, lead efforts to enhance the quality of input data for the Philippines, aligning with our data standards and processes to ensure the highest possible model quality within the available resources
  • Organise and undertake training to educate and upskill policy practitioners and market participants so they can confidently use our modelling software for energy transition planning and investment decisions
  • Produce ‘Updates’ for a focus country / region showcasing the use of in-house data and tools

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be part of the TransitionZero’s Analysis Team, reporting directly to the Southeast Asia Lead Analyst, under the Head of Analysis.

The role is primarily one of research and analysis, involving the maintenance of quantitative and qualitative data and the analysis of the technical, economic and financial impacts in policy. The analyst will be a user of our in-house software suite for energy systems modelling, and will frequently interface with colleagues from the Data and Software team to further assist the development of our tools. Finally, it will be the analyst’s responsibility to sense and check model outputs, so outputs of the Analysis Team showcase the strengths of our modelling tools.

You should be deeply curious about energy and efficient and effective energy transition planning. In addition to seeking out people with a proactive, problem-solving attitude and an eye for detail, as a growing organisation, we greatly value collegiality and empathy for our coworkers.

As this role is fully remote and will require close collaboration and coordination with London-based staff, we greatly value independent workers and good communicators to ensure that this role can work across different time zones and different teams.

While we are a rapidly growing tech startup, we are also a non-profit, so a high level of adaptability and willingness to approach challenges with creativity and curiosity is essential.

Skills and experience

Essential:

  • Proven business-level fluency (written and verbal) in English and Tagalog
  • Experience in engineering, science, economics, finance or business administration, or related fields; vis-a-vis University degree and at least 5 years experience relevant to the position.
  • In-depth familiarity with advanced Excel features, including pivoting and data cleaning
  • Ability to deliver effective presentations and compose effective slides, in compliance with company guidelines and standards
  • Strong knowledge of Philippine electricity markets and policy
  • Familiarity with modelling approaches and modelling software

Beneficial:

  • Familiarity with overall energy markets, policy and modelling
  • Prior experience in consulting or collaborative project work
  • Some familiarity with SQL and coding, in particular Python
  • A network of energy sector contacts in the Philippines and ideally also outside Southeast Asia
  • Comfortable to function in Filipino or another Southeast Asian (ASEAN) language
