This Cookie Policy refers to the website of TransitionZero at www.transitionzero.org (the "Website") and to our Scenario Builder platform at builder.transitionzero.org (the "Platform"). "We" and "our" refer to TransitionZero.
Please also refer to our Privacy Policy, which explains how we use any personal data collected through cookies.
1. What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files that most websites place on your device as you browse. They are processed and stored by your web browser.
Cookies are used to provide essential website functionality, such as remembering your login details and settings; to provide analytics to website owners about how visitors interact with a site; or to provide targeted content and advertising, including on third-party websites. While the data is usually aggregated, cookies can contain information that could be used to identify you, such as an IP address.
Because of this, the use of cookies is regulated under UK GDPR and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), and under the EU GDPR and ePrivacy Directive if you are in the EU.
We group cookies into three types:
- Essential (also called required, functional or strictly necessary) cookies are required for the Website and Platform to work and to keep them secure. They do not require your consent, but we tell you how we use them below.
- Analytics (also called performance or statistics) cookies track how visitors use the Website and Platform so we can understand and improve them. We ask for your consent before setting these.
- Marketing (also called advertising) cookies are used to measure the effectiveness of content we share elsewhere and to show relevant content to people who have visited our site, including on third-party websites. We ask for your consent before setting these.
2. How we use cookies
We use cookies on www.transitionzero.org and on our Scenario Builder platform at builder.transitionzero.org. Because both share the transitionzero.org domain, some cookies set on one are readable on the other.
Essential cookies keep the website and platform working: remembering your cookie choices, keeping you signed in to Scenario Builder and remembering interface settings. These do not need your consent.
Analytics cookies help us understand how people use our website and platform: which pages are read, which links are clicked and how visitors arrive at our site. We use Google Analytics and HubSpot for this, and Userpilot on the Scenario Builder platform. We also use Hotjar (part of Contentsquare) on the website to see how visitors move around pages, through heatmaps and recordings of how a page is scrolled and clicked. It masks what you type into forms and we do not use it to identify you. These cookies are only set with your consent.
Marketing cookies are set by LinkedIn's Insight Tag, which lets us measure the effectiveness of content we share on LinkedIn and show relevant content to people who have visited our site. These cookies are only set with your consent.
We also use Plausible Analytics, a privacy-focused service that collects aggregated, anonymous statistics without using cookies or storing anything on your device.
3. Understanding how you found us
When you accept analytics cookies we set a cookie called tz_first_touch. It records where you arrived from (for example a search engine, LinkedIn or a link in our newsletter), the page you landed on, the date of that first visit and the identifier used by Google Analytics. It is set once, lasts 12 months and is not overwritten on later visits.
If you go on to create a Scenario Builder account, we read this cookie and record how you first found us against your account in Userpilot, our product analytics tool. We use this to understand which channels bring people to the platform and how their experience differs, so we can improve how we reach and support them. This cookie is an analytics cookie and is only set with your consent.
4. Cookies on the Scenario Builder platform
Scenario Builder uses Auth0 to manage sign-in. Auth0 sets essential cookies on auth.transitionzero.org and builder.transitionzero.org to keep you securely signed in. The platform also stores interface preferences (such as whether the sidebar is open) in essential cookies.
We use Userpilot to understand how the platform is used and to show in-app guidance. Userpilot stores identifiers in your browser's local storage rather than in cookies. Our Privacy Policy describes what Userpilot collects and how long it is kept.

Analytics cookies:
Google Analytics
_ga: distinguishes visitors. Lasts 2 years._ga_RWVN2BLBS6: maintains the visit session. Lasts 2 years.
HubSpot
hubspotutk: identifies a visitor to HubSpot and links visits to a contact record if you submit a form. Lasts 6 months.__hstc: tracks visits (first visit, most recent visit, visit count). Lasts 6 months.__hssc: tracks the current visit. Lasts 30 minutes.__hssrc: notes that the browser was restarted during a visit. Lasts for the session.
TransitionZero
tz_first_touch: records how you first found our website (see section 3). Lasts 12 months.
Hotjar / Contentsquare
_cs_id: recognises a returning visitor so their behaviour is attributed to the same anonymous user. Lasts 13 months._cs_s: holds the current visit so page views in one session are grouped together, and whether the session is being recorded. Lasts 30 minutes._cs_s_ctx: stores the page and referrer the visit started from. Lasts 30 minutes._cs_c: records your consent choice for recordings. Lasts 13 months._cs_cvars: holds page context for the current visit. Lasts for the session._cs_optout: set if you opt out of Contentsquare data collection. Lasts 13 months._cs_t,_cs_same_site,_cs_root-domain: check whether the browser supports cookies. Removed immediately after the check._hjClosedSurveyInvites,_hjDonePolls,_hjMinimizedPolls: only set if we show an on-page survey or feedback widget. They remember whether you have seen, closed or completed it so you are not asked again. Last 12 months.
Contentsquare processes this data within the EU.

Embedded YouTube videos may set additional third-party cookies when you play them. We use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode to limit these, but your consent is still needed for the cookies YouTube sets.
6. How to manage your cookies
You can accept or decline analytics and marketing cookies through the cookie banner when you first visit. If you want to change your choice later, clear the cookies for transitionzero.org in your browser and the banner will appear again on your next visit. Essential cookies cannot be switched off through the banner because the website and platform will not work correctly without them.
