Decarbonising the steel industry: modelling pathways in Japan with TZ-OSeMOSYS-STEEL
Join Abhishek Shivakumar, Co-Head of Modelling at TransitionZero, and Akira Kanno, Research Analyst at Transition Asia for an open discussion on how open-source modelling can support industrial decarbonisation, using the steel sector as a case in point. We'll introduce TZ-OSeMOSYS-STEEL, a new modelling tool built to explore credible, cost-effective transition pathways for emissions-intensive industries.
Developed as an extension of the OSeMOSYS framework, the tool demonstrates how open energy system models can be adapted beyond the power sector to inform long-term planning for heavy industry.
We’ll share key insights from the model’s first application to Japan — the world’s third-largest steel producer — including findings on technology pathways, policy implications, and the future competitiveness of low-carbon steel.
This will be followed by an open Q&A to discuss both the modelling approach and its potential application for other countries. The event is relevant to policymakers, industry stakeholders, modellers, and researchers interested in steel decarbonisation, system transitions, and open-source tools.
