Our story
The name TransitionZero is inspired by people who work to transform energy — the ones who operate, develop, finance and advocate for clean energy day in, day out. We see you, and we’re here to empower you.
Our story began in 2018 at the Carbon Tracker Initiative when a small team led by Matt Gray, our Co-founder and CEO, demonstrated the use of computer vision and satellite imagery to estimate greenhouse gas emissions from large fossil fuel facilities in regions where data is unavailable, infrequent or unreliable.
As data, modelling and finance experts, we have seen firsthand how data-driven decisions can accelerate the energy transition. To date, tools to support energy transition planning are based on closed data and models. This situation makes it nearly impossible for all stakeholders to engage in the conversation productively and results in incremental policy development – particularly in low-income countries, where governments often cannot afford expensive consultants.
Our approach
We started TransitionZero in 2021 because we believe with the right tools, low-income countries can develop and implement their own energy transitions. We build open energy transition products without usability barriers and partner with mission-aligned organisations and initiatives to make this happen.
We save users time and money by providing an open and detailed approach to energy transition data validated by the latest geospatial and meteorological science – so you know it’s accurate. In doing so, we help support a global standard for energy transition planning data and shape a future where clean energy is affordable and dependable for all.
