TransitionZero partners with Powering Past Coal Alliance to accelerate universal access to clean energy by leveraging open source data tools

London, UK, 21 February, 2024: Climate analytics not-for-profit TransitionZero is partnering with the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA), supporting its member countries’ commitment to phase out existing unabated coal power generation and retain a moratorium on any new coal power stations without operational carbon capture and storage, within their jurisdictions.

TransitionZero is providing systems modelling data and educational support to the PPCA during this critical year for Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), the emissions reduction plans that underpin the Paris Agreement.

This will include hosting workshops and webinars for PPCA stakeholders, demonstrating how TransitionZero’s suite of open, auditable and accessible energy systems modelling tools can help answer urgent questions about the energy transition. The partnership will also leverage TransitionZero’s expertise in modelling issues related to transmission and the financing of early coal plant retirement.

PPCA is one of a number of influential partners who will be testing TransitionZero’s world-first model builder, an accessible, web-based user interface for energy systems modelling, supporting the alliance’s work advocating for higher NDCs by illustrating how its members can achieve coal phase-out under different scenarios.

Matt Gray, Co-founder and CEO of TransitionZero, commented:

“I am delighted that TransitionZero has partnered with the PPCA and its members as they aim to phase out coal during these critical decades and look forward to demonstrating the value of more open, auditable and accessible data as they develop their NDC plans.”

Julia Skorupska, Head of Secretariat of Powering Past Coal Alliance, commented:

“We are excited to embark on this partnership with TransitionZero, whose innovative approach to developing energy systems modelling tools will be invaluable to governments and system operators as they plan a just and managed phase-out of coal. We look forward to working together to accelerate the global transition from coal to clean.”
